Week 6 football roundup: Amos Glenn, unbeaten Freeport flatten Valley; Ayden Yocum’s big game leads Mars to win
Freeport football was well on its way to a 6-0 start without mounting a single offensive drive in the first two minutes.
It was all the Yellowjackets needed to pound Valley 42-7 and improve to 6-0 this year.
Running back Amos Glenn took the opening kickoff more than 85 yards for a score. Then Freeport blocked Valley’s punt after a three-and-out, recovering it at the 11-yard line. Glenn took the very first handoff in for another score to make it 14-0. And just for good measure, after another three-and-out, Freeport’s special teams again blocked the punt and Dawson Gaillot recovered it in the end zone.
It was 21-0 with less than two minutes elapsed.
Bryson Paga blocked both punts for the Yellowjackets. Glenn scored for a third time to give the ’Jackets a 35-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, and that was about it. He wound up with four touchdowns on the night.
Freeport scored all 42 of its points in the first quarter and had subs playing by the second period. Glenn scored on a 53-yard punt return as well, giving him four kick returns and three punt returns for touchdowns this season.
Mars 46, West Mifflin 0 — Ayden Yocum produced his second 200-yard rushing night of the season, powering Mars football to a blowout win at West Mifflin.
Yocum finished with 242 yards and four scores on 27 carries, continuing a breakout season for the 5-1 Planets. He scored in the first quarter on runs of 8 and 3 yards, then added second-quarter trips to the end zone that covered 25 and 42 yards.
Colin Yurisnec was 9 of 18 passing for 77 yards, connecting with top receiver Gabe Hein seven times for 65 stripes. Hunter Schroder ran nine times for 83 yards and a late score, and Jameson Garvin (five carries, 11 yards) scored twice from short yardage.
Indiana 21, Knoch 14 — A Max Wiley QB sneak from 6 yards out gave the Knights an early 7-0 lead, but they could not hold on and fell to 0-6 this season.
Indiana (3-3) scored on a 12-yard TD pass from Jason Strack, a 59-yard TD pass from Strack and then on his own keeper to make it 21-7.
Carter Beres drove into the end zone in the final minutes from about 5 yards out, but Knoch couldn’t recover the onside kick.
Imani Christian 36, North Catholic 16 — The Trojans’ first strong test of the season ended in their first loss despite two more touchdown throws by QB Joe Felitsky that gave him 22 for the season.
The game was a battle of unbeaten teams.
North led 16-0 early on those two TD tosses, including one on a third-and-26 when Felitsky hit Preston Simko for a 37-yard score. But that was the last NC scored.
Gabe Jenkins plowed over a Trojans defender at the goal line to cut Imani’s deficit to 16-14 in the fourth quarter, then David Davis took a handoff 91 yards to the house on a subsequent drive to go up 22-16. Jenkins, a Penn State recruit, and Davis wound up with two touchdowns each.
Tyvone Sowell wrapped the bow on it with a 6-yard run.
Mt. Lebanon 41, Seneca Valley 20 — Max Eisenhut kicked two first-half field goals of 30 and 48 yards, and quarterback Andrew Loebig threw a TD and ran for another, but it wasn’t enough at home Friday night.
Loebig was 12 of 28 for 124 yards passing, completing a 34-yard pass for a score to Brody Horn, who finished with four catches for 65 yards. And Cayden Parker carried the ball 22 times for 86 yards.
The Raiders led 13-6 in the second quarter before giving up 28 straight points.
