Police: Man carrying gun on Seneca Valley school grounds charged
An Aliquippa man who sent a Seneca Valley school into “secure” status Sept. 15 has been charged.
Cranberry Township police charged David Mathew Lisyuk, 21, on Tuesday, Sept. 23, with misdemeanor possession of a weapon on school property following the incident.
Police said multiple witnesses reported seeing Lisyuk riding a bicycle with a black pistol holstered in a bag on his chest. He was wearing a full face mask with a black hat and hooded sweatshirt when the weather was sunny and about 75 degrees, police said.
Police said Lisyuk emerged around 8:30 a.m. from a path connecting Crestwood Court to the southwestern corner of the Haine Elementary School parking lot. Students were arriving to school and walking in the area at that time.
All Seneca Valley schools were placed on “secure” status after Lisyuk was spotted.
District leaders said there was no direct or immediate threat to students or staff, but outdoor activities, including recess, were moved indoors with limited public access to district buildings.
“At about 9:40 a.m., we had a report of a suspicious individual on Thomson Park Drive,” Lt. Chuck Mascellino said. “The only reason the schools are involved is (because) at approximately 8:30, the male had been seen in the vicinity of one of the schools.
“Out of an abundance of caution, they decided to move the school into secure status — not a lockdown.”
The Cranberry Township Police Department made a Facebook post the same day asking for assistance in identifying Lisyuk. The post was updated around 10 a.m. Sept. 18 to include police had discovered Lisyuk’s identity.
“Cranberry Township Police would like to thank our community for the many tips received in response to this post,“ Chief Kevin Meyer said in the update. ”With your help — and with special thanks to the vigilant officers of the Franklin Park Police Department — the individual has been identified.“
Police said Lisyuk was carrying a functional, privately made 9 mm pistol and was unaware he was on school grounds while passing through the parking lot.
Lisyuk’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Nov. 7 before District Judge Kevin Flaherty.
