Jeep cancels plan for plug-in hybrid Gladiator pickup
Jeep has canceled plans to build a plug-in hybrid version of its Gladiator midsize truck, a move that comes shortly after parent Stellantis NV also halted plans for an all-electric Ram pickup.
"As customers’ propulsion preferences for battery-electric trucks continue to evolve, Stellantis is reassessing its product strategy and will no longer include an electrified Gladiator variant in the Jeep lineup," said a company statement sent by spokesperson Andy Bowman.
Jeep, which recently notified suppliers of the cancellation, said it will continue investing in the Gladiator. The pickup is expected to be built at least into 2028.
Jeep promised to soon release additional factory features, customization options, and new powertrains for the truck, which is currently powered by a 3.6-liter V-6. The Gladiator 4xe cancelation was earlier reported by pickup news site The Fast Lane Truck.
The Gladiator 4xe was initially expected to come out this year, joining the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee SUVs that have offered plug-in hybrid models for the last few years. But planning and production timelines for the new variant had been delayed at the Toledo Assembly Complex, where both the Gladiator and Wrangler are built, United Auto Workers officials previously said. That had raised concerns about whether the hybrid would ever arrive to help bolster production and employment levels at the plant.
Gladiator sales had steadily fallen in recent years after surging to a high of about 90,000 in 2021. However, amid aggressive price cuts on the pickup this year, its sales rose 8% in the first half.
Both the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee will continue to offer the 4xe plug-in models for 2026, a Jeep spokesperson said.
But Stellantis overall has been pivoting away from batteries and back toward gas-powered vehicles under President Donald Trump. Earlier this month, it scrapped plans for a fully-electric Ram 1500 pickup, and the automaker also recently throttled back production of its current plug-in hybrid and EV lineup as the $7,500 federal tax credit neared its end this month.
Meanwhile, the carmaker is bringing back, or extending, Hemi V-8 engine availability in some models. Those gas-guzzling engines were previously expected to go away due to more stringent government emissions standards that the administration is now scrapping.
Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf recently said his brand aims to put Hemis back into more of its vehicles, and would extend the V-8's availability in the top-of-the-line Wrangler. He wouldn't say whether a Hemi would be coming for the Gladiator specifically, but said: "Wrangler and Gladiator fans, and Hemi fans in general, don't worry, we got you."
