Karns City girls soccer fights back on Bonetto-Dailey connection, falls in OT to DuBois

KARNS CITY — Having knotted Wednesday’s matchup with DuBois at two goals apiece, Karns City had the chance to steal victory from its visitors.

The Gremlins didn’t, but there were positives to take away from the 3-2 overtime defeat at Karns City High School.

Karns City (9-3, 6-0 Upper Allegheny Valley) was down a pair early in the 78th minute. Sophia Bonetto connected with Hanna Dailey for a goal on a corner kick soon after, then did it again about five minutes later.

“You have nothing to lose,” Gremlins coach Tracy Dailey said. “You’re two goals down and you’ve gotta get into some type of rhythm. Getting a corner and Hanna scoring (was) a nice momentum changer. We played this team five weeks ago and we lost 5-2, so coming (here) now and a 2-2 tie going into overtime was a great game for us.”

The Beavers’ Anna Korney netted the game winner nearly three minutes into the second sudden-death overtime period. The younger Dailey had a chance to win it with a hat trick on the other side before DuBois quickly worked the ball down the field and past Karns City goalkeeper Giota Bonetto, who’d kept her team in the game after her teammates level the scoreboard.

“Giota was not going to be our goalie this year,” Tracy Dailey said. “One of our other field players, who’s a basketball player, was going to step in goal and, unfortunately, she had a shoulder injury that didn’t allow her to do that. Giota has done so well, works so hard outside of our practicing hours to get her hands better, be able to navigate the goal and where she needs to be in positioning. That’s what I told her. She made five, six saves coming out big and sliding on the ground and winning the ball.”

Despite the setback, the Gremlins coach saw strides being made.

“We need games like this,” Dailey said. “These are the games that you learn, that you grow, that you really dig deep. … We need that.”
