John Garrett West, 91, of Slippery Rock, passed away at his residence Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025.

He was born in Slippery Rock on Jan. 18, 1934, to Garrett Luttrell “Sam” West and Evelyn Mae Matthews West.

He married Janet Alberta McNeish on June 13, 1957, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 14, 2016.

John had worked for over 30 years for the Borough of Slippery Rock where he was widely respected and appreciated. He actively and faithfully managed the Slippery Rock Cemetery for many years. John was known for his integrity, fairness and perseverance.

He and wife, Janet, enjoyed traveling all over the United States. He stood by the Redwoods in California, visited Alaska twice and saw the whales in Maine.

He first spotted his wife, Janet, in pigtails in high school. He won her over later when they were both working for McGowan Lumber. He cherished her and took care of her all of her life. His pride and joy came at 70, when he became a proud grandfather to his only grandchild, Emma.

He was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Kathy L. (Dennis) Garner, of Harrisville, Karen E. West, of Butler, and Janet E. (Brian Burnor) West, of Chesapeake Beach, Md. Also surviving is granddaughter, Emma.

John was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and two sisters, Isabelle McDeavitt and Esther Thompson.

WEST — The family of John Garrett West, who died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025, will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Saturday at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the funeral home, led by the Rev. Jeff Curtis.

Interment will be in Slippery Rock Cemetery.
