College sports roundup: SRU cross country finishes 1st, t-2nd at Ben Mourer Memorial Classic
Slippery Rock women’s cross country won Allegheny College’s Ben Mourer Memorial Classic title Saturday, and the men’s team tied for second with Geneva.
The meet was named after Ben Mourer, Allegheny College’s cross country coach and a Karns City High School graduate who died in June at 40 years old in an accident at home.
Mourer was also a runner at Allegheny in the mid-2000s, finishing second in the North Coast Athletic Conference championship meet in 2006 and leading the team to its best finish (third) in the NCAA Division III championships that year.
Senior Ruthie Hughes finished third for SRU’s women in 23:53, as The Rock placed four inside the top 12. Sophomore Eli Schreiber paced the men with a 27:53 for 14th. SRU’s men edged out rival Grove City for third by two points with 95. The Grove City women’s team finished fifth.
Host Allegheny finished sixth in the women’s race and eighth in the men’s race.
Westminster freshman and Seneca Valley grad Phil Silvis came in 56th in 31:44.
Seneca Valley grad Sean O’Shea, a sophomore quarterback at Westminster, threw for an 80-yard touchdown, ran for another and finished with 168 yards passing and 56 on the ground in a 28-23 win over Case Western Reserve.
Butler High grad Jaxon Salata shot a collegiate career low 73 to lead Butler County Community College men’s golf to wins over Westmoreland County Community College (311-321) and Community College of Allegheny County (311-349) at Lake Arthur Golf Club on Friday.
Marissa Salisbury scored twice in the second half Saturday, her second and third of the season, and Sophia Palermo scored and had an assist in Slippery Rock’s 5-0 shutout of California (Pa.). SRU improved to 2-2-0 (2-0-0 PSAC).
Alvey Kaufman made three saves in SRU’s 1-0 loss Saturday to Shippensburg. The Rock fell to 2-2-1.
Slippery Rock went 4-0 over the weekend at the D’Youville Tournament, capping the two-day event with a 3-1 win over Kutztown and 3-0 victory over Frostburg State.
Callie Chevalier had 10 kills and three blocks against the Golden Bears and 12 kills and a block in the second game. Gwen McCarthy had 22 combined kills. SRU improved to 7-5 this season.
