Martin ‘Mark’ Matscherz

Matscherz

Martin “Mark” Luther Matscherz, 72, of Zelienople, passed away Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025, after a well-fought battle with pancreatic cancer.

Mark was born in Pittsburgh on Aug. 22, 1953, to the late Martin L. and Helen J. (Andrews) Matscherz. He grew up in the North Side of Pittsburgh and attended Perry High School. Mark moved to Franklin Township in 1972 and loved working on the family farm with his dad and brother. Mark married the love of his life, Gailyn, in 1977, and shortly thereafter moved to Zelienople.

Mark worked as a draftsman in the former part of his life and then worked for the Borough of Zelienople for 31 years, where he retired as the supervisor of the street department in 2017. A man of great faith, Mark was Lutheran and attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Zelienople.

He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Mark was a man of few words, but the words he chose to speak were profound and a blessing to those who loved him. He told the best stories about growing up in the North Side.

Mark leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife, Gailyn (Johnson); his four daughters, Cassandra (Russell) Zoelle, Sara (Erik) Nielsen, Meghan (Gregory) Gentile and Hannah (Jonathan) Darkey; and six grandchildren, Aryanna and Kellen Nielsen, Mark and Luke Zoelle and Grace and Margaret Darkey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Edward Matscherz.

He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends.
