JACKSON TWP — After Jacob Prex netted Seneca Valley’s third goal of the night, North Allegheny’s frustration bubbled over.
The Tigers scored 20 seconds later, answering NA goalkeeper Xavier Zyskowski’s plea for some help, but it wasn’t enough in a 3-1 Raiders win.
Seneca Valley coach George Williams said the offensive success against their nearby foe was a result of being persistent. The Raiders netted goals early in each half, which also helped.
“We just tried to keep working, we tried to keep the ball moving,” Williams said. “There’s times where when you’re trying to keep the ball moving side to side and trying to keep them chasing, you can find those holes.
“But we’ve also got some guys who can handle the ball and beat players 1-on-1. That’s a tough group to defend against.”
North Allegheny (5-2-2, 2-1-1) entered the night above Seneca Valley on the WPIAL Section 3-4A table. The Raiders (8-1-0, 3-1-0) nearly matched the four goals North Allegheny had allowed in its initial eight outings. Seneca Valley has won two in a row after a letdown at Fox Chapel a week ago.
Raiders senior captain Owen Eastgate booted in a late-fifth-minute penalty kick to stake his side to a 1-0 lead. Zyskowski lunged to his left, incorrectly guessing Eastgate’s intentions. Eastgate said he’s had four or five such chances this season, connecting on each of them.
“I just look at the keeper the entire time,” Eastgate said. “Slow run-up, and just the other side (of) where the keeper goes, I place it.
“It’s not a given. He’s still gotta take the kick and the goalkeeper still has a chance at it,” Williams said. “But he’s shown that he’s got some great confidence at that so far.”
Before his 42nd-minute marker, Prex also assisted on junior Tomis Spudic’s deposit in the 26th minute, allowing him to punt a corner kick into the top right corner of the net. Senior Michael Pokrzywinski helped on Prex’s goal.
“We just played exactly how we always play,” Prex said. “The past couple games, we haven’t played how we wanted to, but we came here today — playing NA, they’re obviously our big rivals — we came here to play.”
It was North Allegheny’s Francis Randiga who promptly replied to Prex’s score, putting in his team’s lone goal.
The two sides will meet once more this regular season on Oct. 7. Seneca Valley will travel to North Hills to cap the first cycle of section matchups Thursday.
