High school sports roundup: Freeport’s Ethan Crooks wins WPIAL golf section title; Butler, SV send several to district meet

Freeport’s Ethan Crooks fired an even-par 72 to place first at the WPIAL Section 1-2A tournament Monday at Three Lakes Golf Course near Penn Hills.

It is the third straight year the Yellowjackets have had a golfer win the section championship.

Also advancing to the first round of the WPIAL individual tournament, which begins next week, were Carson Kane (77), Aiden Bauman (82), Max Zigo (82) and Jackson Kane (84).

The five golfers moving on ties a single-season record for Freeport.

WPIAL Class 3A — At Saxon Golf Course, Butler advanced five of six golfers at the Section 3 tournament. They are Boden Lenyk (79), Levi McClellan (79), Jase Renwick (81), Anthony Trombatt (81) and Karsten Lenyk (81).

Moving on for Mars are Lukas Singh (73), Jackson Geiger (75), Jack Weaver (77), Jaxon Hittle (78) and Finn McKenzie (80).

For Seneca Valley, Anthony Cardosi (73), Josh Marquardt (76), Vinci Villella (77), Marcos Lopez (79), CJ Gworek (80) and Bradley Steiner (81) made the cut.

Knoch’s Aaron Voltz advanced with a 78.

North Allegheny’s Preston Troiano won the section title with a 68.

The first round of WPIALs in Class 3A will begin Monday at Willowbrook Country Club.

KSAC mega match — A-C Valley/Union’s Joe Rapp carded a 39 to pace local golfers at Clarion Oaks Golf Course.

The Falcon Knights finished with 225 strokes, a distant second behind Keystone’s 189. The Panthers featured the individual champion, Sean Karg, with his 33.

KC’s Joey O'Donnell had a 41, Moniteau’s Tyson Voloch a 42.

Girls golf

Butler edged Blackhawk 172-174 at Blackhawk Golf Course.

The Golden Tornado’s top four golfers each scored in the 40s — Rylee Gage (40), Macie McLister (42), Katie Dick (44) and McKenzie McCorry (46).

Butler improved to 3-9.

KSAC mega match — Moniteau, led by Juliette Brown’s 55, placed second behind Cranberry at Pinecrest Country Club. The Warriors tallied 170 strokes, the Berries 164.

Maddy Allbee carded a 55 for Karns City, Kennedy Kinney a 57 for A-C Valley/Union.

Girls tennis

North Catholic sophomore Evelyn Marche won the WPIAL Section 3-2A girls singles title last week, downing Hampton’s McKenna Restori 10-0, Trojanettes teammate Macaria Stall 6-4, 6-1 and Ellis’ Allegra Scaringi 6-1, 6-1. Marche and Scaringi both had byes to the tournament quarterfinals.

Stall earned the third-place consolation by downing Hampton’s Arianna Barbera 6-4, 6-1. Barbera defeated Knoch junior Alana Moroney 11-10 (7-3) in the quarterfinals.

The WPIAL Girls Tennis Singles Tournament will be held Wednesday and Thursday.

Butler 3, Montour 2 — Golden Tornado senior Laini Spohn rebounded from dropping the first set at No. 1 singles to the Spartans’ Raven Karlik and earned a 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory.

Also winning for Butler were Lindsay Lipp at No. 3 singles and the duo of Sophia Kingsley/Cassie Sklencar at No. 1 doubles.

North Allegheny 5, Seneca Valley 0 — The Raiders won 13 games in this loss to the Tigers.

Boys soccer

Mason Bell and Trevor Rumbaugh scored for Karns City in a 3-2 loss to Brockway.

Brock Dittman had eight saves for KC.

Girls soccer

Jade Breese had a hat trick, Miley Gratton two goals and Addison Jacoby and Katie Blake one each as Mars downed Penn Hills 7-0. The Planets (6-2, 3-2 in WPIAL Section 1-3A) welcome in Obama Academy for a non-conference tilt Wednesday.

Karns City 2, Brockway 1 — Bree O’Donnell and Phoebe Brandon each had a goal for the Gremlins.

Butler 2, Taylor Allderdice 0 — Cecelia Wolford scored the goals for the Golden Tornado (4-3-1) with Lucia Leyland and Ava Soley both contributing an assist.

Freeport 3, Burrell 1 — The Yellowjackets received goals from Camryn Woods, Nia DiSanti and Cece Schlegel.

Ella McConville and Peyton Los both had an assist.

Girls volleyball

Despite a combined 21 kills and nine blocks from Danilynn Wallace and Emily Matz, Moniteau dropped a 3-1 decision to Franklin.

Maddy Eury added 14 assists for the Warriors, who lost by scores of 14-25, 25-19, 16-25 and 17-25.
