High school sports roundup: Moniteau volleyball sweeps Karns City; Slippery Rock girls win cross country invite

Moniteau girls volleyball earned a three-set sweep over rival Karns City on Saturday by set scores of 25-19, 25-16, 25-12.

Emily Matz knocked home a game-high 10 kills for the Warriors and had three blocks, six aces and five digs. Maddy Eury dished out 13 assists (and an ace), eight of them to Sayge Bruntz and another five to Danilynn Wallace.

Addison Fox led the Gremlins (3-4, 1-3 region) with seven assists and nine digs, while Regan Schmoll had a team-high six kills.

Between the varsity and JV games, both teams wore t-shirts in support of Moniteau freshman Annabella Cornelius, who was recently diagnosed with brain cancer.

Redbank Valley 3, Union 0 — Bri Anthony had a team-high six kills to go along with eight digs for Union, which lost 25-13, 25-20, 25-18. Lilly Hayden had 18 digs, and Riley Kriebel fed her attackers on 11 assists to go along with five digs and two aces.

Cross country

Slippery Rock’s girls team won the Commodore Perry Invitational as Leah Perez led the way with a seventh-place finish in 20:33. The Rockets edged Mercer by three points with 84.

Kasey Yeager was one spot behind, crossing the line in 20:51. Freshman Lydia Springirth came in 15th in 21:30.

The boys team finished 13th, as Hunter Dorflinger came in 11th with a time of 17:49 to lead the Rockets.

Boys soccer

Everett Reges and Jude Perhaces had identical lines of two goals and an assist in Butler’s 7-0 win over Slippery Rock on Saturday.

Colten English had a goal and two assists, and Max Davis and Aiden Ansani also scored. Thaddeus Mago and Colton Crider combined in net for the shutout.

Freeport 2, Springdale 1 — Carson Rowley and Dante Treglia led the Yellowjackets with a goal apiece. Treglia added an assist.

Girls soccer

Lucia Leyland scored twice in Butler’s 5-0 win over Mercer. Ava Soley, Brooke Steyer and Aubrey Goss also scored.

Football

Danarii Mickel broke off a 94-yard touchdown run in the final minutes, but Summit Academy fell to 0-4 after a 42-6 home loss to South Side.

Mickel finished with four carries for 67 yards. QB Syamir Newkirk finished 6 of 13 passing for 34 yards and an interception.
