Bill May presents ‘The Civil War Spy Who Loved Her’

Storyteller Bill May will bring a Civil War mystery story to life at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Butler Area Public Library, 218 N. McKean St. in Butler.

Agnes Lee was the prettiest of Confederate General’s Robert E. Lee’s four daughters. Orton Williams was her childhood friend, cousin and romantic suitor that war changed into a reckless, hard-drinking officer with a violent temper.

Agnes Lee's rejection of his marriage proposal would lead Williams, the great-grandson of Martha Washington, to take on a dangerous mission resulting in his being tried as a spy captured behind Union lines.

Their love story and the circumstances surrounding his capture and hanging still remain one of the Civil War's unsolved mysteries, said an email from May.

The talk is free to attend, but to reserve a seat, email dmccauley@bcfls.org or call 724-287-1715.
