Donald Joseph Weiland, 98, of Butler, passed away Monday, Sept. 8, 2025, at Quality Life Services — Chicora.

Born in Butler on Sept. 26, 1926, he was a son of the late Joseph Bernard Weiland and Florence “Tippy” Eyth Weiland.

Don proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was part of an engineers group with the occupation forces on Okinawa.

After the war, and following trade school in Chicago, he returned to Butler and worked as an electrician at Armco. A skilled handyman, he also wired houses for family and friends.

He was a member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish, St. Wendelin Roman Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus, St. Wendelin Council 14103. A talented musician, Don entertained at the annual St. Wendelin’s picnic and at other local church festivals.

Don was a member of American Legion Post 642 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. For 25 years, he served on the rifle squad that accorded military honors at veterans’ funerals. He was a member of “Ritzert’s Rounders,” and he volunteered with Meals on Wheels. He was known for his parties and for his “Oil Well Show” once a year. He also never missed an episode of the TV show “Oak Island.”

Don is survived by his beloved wife, Emma Glynn Weiland. The couple recently celebrated 76 years of marriage. He is also survived by five children, Elaine Minto and her husband, Nick, of Butler, Joan Anderson and her husband, Mark, of Lower Burrell, Judy Ross, of Nicholasville, Ky., John “Jack” Weiland, of Butler, and Alice Nelson and her husband, Henry, of Tampa, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by one son, Paul Donald Weiland, who passed away in 1999. He was also the last surviving sibling of his family, as he was preceded in death by his five brothers, Thomas, Robert, Francis “Gabby,” Leo and David Weiland; and his four sisters, Virginia “Ginny” Birckbichler, Madeline “Sis” Neff, Joan Gibbs and Norma Jean Bender Kudamik.

WEILAND — Friends of Donald Joseph Weiland, who died Monday, Sept. 8, 2025, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at MARTIN FUNERAL HOME DOWNTOWN, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at St. Claire of Assisi Parish, St. Wendelin Roman Catholic Church, 210 Saint Wendelin Road, Butler, with the Rev. Matt McClain officiating.

Military honors will be accorded at the church by American Legion Post 642 of Chicora and American Legion Post 488 of Bradys Bend.

Burial will take place in St. Wendelin Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to St. Clare of Assisi Parish, 864 Chicora Road, Chicora, PA 16025.
