Mars Area School District aiming to acquire golf simulator
Students at Mars Area School District could soon tee off with some new interactive technology.
Officials are in the early phases of acquiring a golf simulator to place in the basement of the centennial school.
During a Wednesday, Sept. 3, work session meeting, the school board approved a $3,693 proposal from Metal Fence Supply Company to finish and install a 96-inch high galvanized chain link system for the area in which the system would be set up.
That purchase is part of an ongoing effort to clean out an otherwise unused space that will house the golf simulator, which will include a driving simulator and one or two putting greens.
The prospective room has already been painted, superintendent Mark Gross said.
“We’ve never had anything like this before,” he said. “So the goal would be to have it in the centennial building so it can work with the younger kids and get them interested in it.”
Once the renovations are complete, the next step would be to acquire all of the necessary technology.
However, Gross noted officials are not looking for the simulator to be a district purchase. He said assistant superintendent Elizabeth McMahon is partnering with members of the school’s golf program to raise funds.
No funding or equipment has been secured yet, according to Josh Schwoebel, the school’s director of communications. He also noted school officials would “share additional information once the golf simulator is up and running.”
As of now, it is unclear how much the simulator would cost and whether or not there are options, such as grants, that could relieve some of the financial burden.
Online purchasing options for simulators range from a few thousand dollars for a more basic setup to up to $30,000 for a professional grade system.
