PA American Water announces wastewater project in Butler Township
Pennsylvania American Water announced Thursday, Sept. 4, it will start a project to replace an aging wastewater main in Butler Township.
According to a release by the company, the $479,000 project will replace nearly 2,000 feet of a 12-inch main that had already been subject to multiple breaks. Future upgrades in the same section are also planned.
“Since acquiring the Butler Area Sewer Authority, we’ve been committed to making necessary improvements,” Michelle Cavallo, manager of northwest wastewater operations for Pennsylvania American Water, said. “By replacing aging wastewater mains that are prone to breaks, we are lowering the risk of untreated wastewater leaking into the environment and helping to safeguard water quality and public health.”
Single-lane traffic closures will take place on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. while crews are working. Construction is expected to take 30 to 45 days.
“After installing the wastewater main, the road’s excavated section will be repaired to endure winter weather,” the release said. “During spring, company contractors will reopen the road to replace the old water main in the area. After both the water and wastewater main replacements are finished, the affected section of Sawmill Run Road will be fully resurfaced.”
Butler Township manager Tom Knights said the township has been aware of problems with Sawmill Run Road’s water mains for some time and is glad to hear it is being addressed.
“The main has been subject to numerous breaks over many years,” Knights said. “It’s a good project that Butler Township supports Pennsylvania American Water taking on.”
