Worth Township takes steps to stop speeding

One of Butler County’s rural municipalities is aiming to put a stop to speeding on its roads.

Worth Township supervisors, at a Tuesday, Sept. 2, meeting, updated the township’s speed limit ordinance to include a new maximum speed limit for about half a dozen township roads.

The supervisors set the speed limit to 40 mph on Mount Union, Countryview, West Liberty and Studebaker roads and lowered the speed limits on Currie and West Park roads to 40 mph.

Previously Mount Union, Countryview, West Liberty and Studebaker roads had no marked speed limits, which means the default limit was 55 mph, per a state law.

“Maybe it will help,” vice Chairman Gene Reeher said.

It’s tough for municipalities like Worth Township that use state police to oversee its traffic enforcement. The police force, stretched across the state, may not make speed enforcement in Worth Township a priority on any given day, but they could.

The change undoubtedly won’t curb all speeding on the township’s roads, but it will suggest a safer, slower limit for drivers.

Actions like the one taken at Tuesday’s meeting move the needle in the right direction, reduce potential liability for the township and may save lives.
