Man charged after allegedly strangling girlfriend on Route 79

An arrest warrant has been issued for a Pittsburgh man in connection to an incident that occurred while he was driving with his girlfriend on Aug. 31.

Christopher Bronaugh, of McKees Rocks, was charged Tuesday, Sept. 2, with two felony counts of strangulation, three misdemeanor counts of recklessly endangering another person, a count of misdemeanor simple assault and four counts of harassment after police say he assaulted his girlfriend and left her on Interstate 79.

After responding to mile marker 103 in Worth Township, state police said they found the victim in a “state of distress” with torn clothing and “fresh red marks along the right side of her neck,” indicating recent strangulation injuries.

The victim told police she and Bronaugh were arguing on their way home from Splash Lagoon in Erie, prompting her to move to the rear passenger seat.

She said Bronaugh grabbed her by the neck multiple times and struck her in the face with his hand before pulling over along the interstate, police said.

Police said after the victim exited the vehicle, Bronaugh continued traveling south on Interstate 79.

Bronaugh’s whereabouts are unknown at this time, according to police.
