High school sports roundup: Union/A-C Valley edges out Keystone; Butler’s Slear takes first place in cross country race

Trent Fleming caught an 85-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Kifer and Max Gallagher barged in from 2 yards out as Union/A-C Valley narrowly downed Keystone 15-14 on the gridiron on Thursday night.

Kifer’s 2-point conversion pass to Aidan Fox gave the Falcon Knights (3-0) a 9-point lead with 4:16 to go in the third frame.

Kifer finished 10 for 17 for 207 yards, a touchdown and an interception through the air. Gallagher led the charge on the ground with 54 yards and a score on 16 gives.

Cross country

Butler freshman Landon Slear ran a boys’ first-place time of 19:19.05 during a meet at Avonworth on Thursday. He was followed by the Antelopes’ Ryder Evans (19:46.00) and Golden Tornado junior Alex Motonis (3rd, 20:24.90), sophomore Rylan Hakeem (4th, 20:38.80) and freshman Justin Sellinger (5th, 20:54.60) rounded out the top five.

Butler sophomore Kyra Olivares won the girls’ race.

Boys soccer

Mason Bell notched a hat trick for Karns City during a 3-1 win over Sharpsville on Thursday. Ty McFarland and Camden Slater had assists for the Gremlins.

Seneca Valley 6, Butler 0 — Owen Eastgate had a pair of scores for the Raiders (6-0, 1-0), while Chase Good earned the clean sheet. Chase Lively, Zach White, Max Gochis and Michael Pokrzywinski added goals.

The Golden Tornado fell to 2-2 with the loss to open section play.

North Catholic 5, Freeport 0 — Angelo Amelio had two goals and Arthur Mendonca, Austin English and Justin Garvey others as the Trojans won this WPIAL Section 1-2A clash.

North Catholic faces Shady Side Academy at home on Tuesday.

Mars 8, Indiana 1 — Landon Eagon had a goal for the Planets, who improved to 3-2-1 (2-0-1).

Girls volleyball

Maddy Dehart had a dozen kills and Alexia Altman 22 assists as A-C Valley swept Forest. The scores of the match were 25-11, 25-10 and 25-2.

Karns City 3, Leechburg 0 — Naomi Venesky notched 11 kills, an ace and five digs for the Gremlins (3-1). Karns City won by scores of 25-22, 25-17 and 25-20.

Moniteau 3, Cranberry 0 — Sayge Brunst had six blocks, an ace and four kills for the winning Warriors. The scores of the match were 25-20, 25-20 and 25-18.

Fairview 3, Slippery Rock 2 — Adi Novad had three kills and eight digs as the Rockets (2-2) lost by scores of 27-25, 21-25, 21-25, 25-23 and 10-15.

Seneca Valley 3, Hampton 0 — No further details were provided.

Girls soccer

North Catholic downed Karns City 1-0 on Thursday. No other details were provided.

Boys golf

Knoch moved to 3-6 on the season with a 209-225 win over New Castle on Thursday. Aaron Voltz and Jake Jones both carded a 36 for the Knights.

Girls golf

Rylee Gage led Butler with a 49 as the Golden Tornado lost 178-237 to North Allegheny at Diamond Run Golf Course. Butler falls to 2-8 on the season.

Girls tennis

Cathedral Prep swept North Catholic 5-0 on Wednesday night. The Trojanettes’ Anna Ravotti put up a fight against Lydia Beuchert in No. 3 singles, but lost 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.
