High school sports roundup: Mars soccer’s Jade Breese records hat trick in win; Freeport’s Camryn Woods scores winner

Jade Breese’s hat trick highlighted Mars’ 4-1 girls soccer victory against Gateway in WPIAL Section 1-3A action Wednesday.

Miley Gratton also scored for the Planets (4-1, 1-1).

Freeport 3, Shady Side Academy 2 — Camryn Woods scored the game-winner in overtime for the Yellowjackets.

Nia DiSanti tallied Freeport’s first two goals. Assists went to CeCe Schlegel and Woods.

Pine-Richland 4, Butler 0 — The Golden Tornado (2-2, 0-1) lost their Section 3-4A opener on the road.

Boys golf

Knoch, Slippery Rock and Pine-Richland met for a tri-match at Slippery Rock Golf Club.

The Rockets placed third as a team with 428 strokes, but featured a solid 76 from Ryan Parson.

Knoch tallied 414 strokes, led by a 78 from Aaron Voltz and a 79 from Colt Sprankle.

Pine-Richland’s 373 included a pair of 2-over-par 72s from Sam Scheck and Mike Pifer.

KSAC mega match — A-C Valley/Union’s Koen Strauser and Keystone’s Sean Karg shared medalist honors with a 34 at Hunter’s Station Golf Course near Tionesta.

The Falcon Knights also got a 36 from Joe Rapp, good for fourth overall, to help the team place second behind Keystone (185) with 201 strokes.

Moniteau was third with 208, paced by Carson Minnear’s 37. Karns City’s Joey O'Donnell carded a 41.

Central Catholic 193, North Catholic 193 — The Vikings defeated the Trojans on a playoff hole at Pheasant Ridge Golf Club.

North’s Ben Kandravy fired a 34.

Girls golf

At Suncrest Golf Course, Addison Pangonis fired a 40 and Elise Wadas 41 for Mars in a 167-174 loss to North Allegheny.

Cross country

Moniteau’s Alexis Kirschner finished second overall with an effort of 23:52 in a meet against North Clarion. The Warriors also earned fourth and fifth place with Brinn Kirschner and Gracie Hartle, respectively.

North Clarion’s Abby Hastings was first in 21:59. No team score was tallied for the girls.

The Wolves won the boys meet 21-38. Moniteau’s Peyton Beck came in third in 19:30. Baylen Rock was fifth.

North Clarion’s Ethan Hastings was first at 18:42.

Central Clarion (boys) 18, Karns City 44 — The Gremlins’ Noah Weiland placed third with a time of 18:40. Central Clarion’s Hayden Weber won the race at 18:18. No team score was tallied for the girls.

Girls volleyball

Lilly Hayden registered six kills, 20 digs and four aces in Union’s 25-16, 25-7, 25-15 sweep of visiting Forest Area.

Riley Kriebel added 25 assists and Brooke Hileman five kills in the win.

Brockway 3, Moniteau 0 — The host Rovers won by set scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-19.

Emily Matz had six kills for the Warriors and Maddy Eury eight assists.

Karns City 3, Springdale 1 — The Gremlins topped the Dynamos by scores of 25-15, 25-13, 17-25 and 25-20.

Naomi Venesky dropped 11 kills in the win, and Addison Fox had 15 digs.

Jessica Rodgers contributed 14 assists and Regan Schmoll six kills for the Gremlins (2-1, 1-1).
