Carnegie man crashes into 2 police cars while fleeing officers in Adams Township

A Carnegie man crashed into two police vehicles while fleeing apprehension Wednesday, Aug. 27, in Adams Township, according to charges filed last week.

Matthew Richard Thompson, 35, was charged with one felony count each of aggravated assault, escape and flight; and two misdemeanor counts of accident involving damage and a misdemeanor count of fleeing police following the incident.

Adams Township police were requested to assist Northern Regional police and Castle Shannon police in locating Thompson, who had been spotted earlier in the day. Police suspected Thompson of being armed.

Police located Thompson’s vehicle at Continental Construction. As police were giving Thompson commands in the parking lot, Thompson put his vehicle in reverse and accelerated into a Northern Regional patrol vehicle that had pulled behind him, according to the affidavit.

Police said Thompson then rapidly accelerated away from police, fleeing down a hill toward the exit and crashing into the passenger side of an Adams Township police vehicle before continuing on. A police officer injured a knee in the incident, according to the affidavit.

Police said as Thompson continued driving, his vehicle went over a hillside onto an embankment, where he exited the vehicle and was taken into custody.

Thompson’s preliminary hearing is scheduled at 9 a.m. Wednesday before District Judge Amy Marcinkiewicz. He’s being held in Butler County Prison on a $100,000 bail.
