CRANBERRY TWP — Tuesday night couldn’t have gone any better for North Catholic’s Audra Lazzara.

First, the Trojanettes’ junior outside hitter helped seal a five-set girls volleyball win over neighborly rival Mars in her team’s season opener. Then she was asked to homecoming, leaving with a bouquet of flowers.

“The fifth set definitely helps,” said Lazzara, who notched four kills in the deciding game. “(It) made it a perfect night.”

North Catholic (1-0) fell behind two sets to the Planets (2-2) by scores of 25-22 and 25-20. The Trojanettes took the next three 25-14, 26-24 and 15-10 at home.

“We weren’t really expecting them to click right away,” North Catholic coach Amanda Fetter said. “Now, I did think that they were really more high error than my liking for the first two sets, which is what we kinda talked about. We didn’t talk about getting in a flow or a rhythm. We talked about keeping the ball in play.”

Lazzara admitted the Trojanettes weren’t sure what to expect entering the night. Rotations were unclear up until pregame.

“I felt like my kids were just taking way better and way smarter risks,” Fetter said. “Audra, for instance, wasn’t just going up and ripping a ball 45 feet out of bounds. She was tipping it and living to see another day.”

“We have some young kids on the court, and it’s a big match,” Mars coach Tami Caraway said. “North is not gonna back down, they’re gonna make adjustments. And for some of our young kids, that’s a lot of pressure. … But every time we get out there, they get better.”

After taking the teeter-tottering fourth set, North Catholic never trailed in the fifth.

“It felt pretty good,” Lazzara said. “There’s times where everybody in the gym is cheering for you, and it feels great.”

“She’s always huge,” Fetter said. “When Audra’s playing outside of herself and she’s being a leader, she can take over a match.”

Cecilia Christy and Rylee Wooldridge both starred for the Planets. Christy had an unofficial eight kills and four blocks, while Wooldridge had 13 kills.
