Mars library hosting food preservation lessons

The Mars Area Public Library is hosting two classes that will teach people methods of preserving foods.

The first is at 10 a.m. on Sept. 13, and is titled “Home Food Preservation: Introduction to Preserving.” The two-hour class costs $15 and will explain the scientific principles behind modern home food preservation methods while dispelling common myths and outdated practices. Recent research has provided new insights into the science of safe preservation through methods of canning, freezing and drying food, according to a news release from the library.

The second class is at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 17 and is titled “Home Food Preservation: Fermented Pickles and Sauerkraut.” The class is also two hours and costs $15. It will cover the art and science of fermenting pickles and sauerkraut.
