Why Butler football could end up with 8 home games in 2025

Butler football hit the road for a number of long road trips last season.

The Golden Tornado traveled to Meadville, Hollidaysburg, Connellsville, as well as two jaunts to West Virginia to face University High, located in Morgantown, and Wheeling Park.

Head coach Eric Christy is looking forward to seeing the friendly confines of Art Bernardi Stadium more often this year, and his team may be playing host more than what was included on the original schedule.

Already with six home games on the slate, Butler’s contests against Westinghouse (Sept. 19) and Taylor Allderdice (Oct. 10), both currently set to be played at Cupples Stadium in Pittsburgh, could be moved to Butler.

Cupples Stadium serves as the home venue for the City League’s five football teams, along with Carrick, which plays an independent schedule. Several high school soccer games are also scheduled there this fall.

“I got a text from Allderdice in July, saying that the game time had to be moved (from 7 p.m.) to 3:30,” Butler athletic director Bill Mylan said. “But now, there seems to be a mix-up with the schedule at Cupples. I sent an email to both schools, letting them know that we can host both games. I haven’t heard back yet, but I’d like to know either way within the next couple of weeks.”

Butler opens the season Friday at Shaler. If both games scheduled for Cupples Stadium are switched to Butler, the Golden Tornado’s only other road test would come Oct. 24 at Central Clarion.

Christy would not complain about two more home dates, especially after the miles his team logged in 2024.

“It’s the hometown crowd, not having to ride on a bus, using our own facilities,” he said. “That’s home-field advantage. Hopefully, we’ll find out soon what the deal is.”
