Myrtle V. Mathews, 96, of Zelienople, formerly of Evans City, passed away peacefully at Lutheran Senior Life Abundant Care on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025, under the wonderful and compassionate care of the nursing staff.

Born July 11, 1929, in Marianna, Pa., she was the daughter to William and Marie Iddings.

She was a graduate of West Bethlehem High School and was a member of Grace Church of Harmony. Myrtle had several jobs during her years in the community and retired from the shipping department of Lancy Laboratories in Zelienople.

She had a deep passion for cooking and baking, and she shared many delicious baked goods with community groups as well and family and friends. She enjoyed being on several bowling teams throughout the years and watched the Pittsburgh sports teams, but especially was a fan of the Steelers.

Upon graduation she married Harold N. Mathews and was a loving wife for 63 years. The couple resided in Evans City along with their four children. Her family was her life, and she always put them first.

She was the mother of Clara (Richard) Phillips, of New Brighton, Pa., Wray (Debbie) Mathews, of Lyman, S.C., Krystal J. Mathews, of Sarver, and Brenda (Dan) Lemmon, of The Villages, Fla.; five grandchildren, Kirsi Mathews, Damian (Sherry) Mathews, Thomas J. Walker, Michael (Beth) Phillips and Scott (Lin Dah) Phillips; 10 great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Natalie, Meghan, Leah, Kaitlyn, Macy, Chelsea, Hudson, Greyson and Landon; one brother, Wray Iddings; one brother- in-law, Roy Knestrick; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold N. Mathews, on March 23, 2011; eleven siblings; one infant great-granddaughter, Holland; and one great-grandson, Dagan.

MATHEWS — Friends and family of Myrtle V. Mathews, who died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025, will be received from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Seaman Memorial Chapel at Passavant Retirement Community, 105 Burgess Drive, Zelienople. A funeral ceremony will follow the viewing.

She will be laid to rest at Grace Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Myrtle’s memory to Lutheran Senior Life Benevolent Fund of Zelienople, Pa.; Grace Church of Harmony, Pa.; and/or the Western PA American Diabetes Association.
