Police: Slippery Rock man overdoses 3 times in 2 days at Butler hospital

A Slippery Rock man overdosed on heroin three times in two days while being treated at Butler Memorial Hospital, according to police.

Tyler Prentice Baptie, 31, was charged Thursday, Aug. 14, with one misdemeanor count each of controlled substance possession and drug paraphernalia possession following the Monday and Tuesday incidents.

Butler County Sheriff Mike Slupe said the situation was one of the most unique he’s seen during his more than 15 years in office. The incident will prompt sheriff deputies to constantly monitor Baptie for the next two weeks, at which time he’s scheduled to be sentenced in another case — a felony charge of firearms possession without a license.

Butler Township police said they were dispatched to the hospital around 12:30 a.m. Monday for reports of a man who had heroin delivered to him. He was being treated for an arm infection, according to court documents.

Police spoke with hospital security and learned Baptie had overdosed earlier in the day. Baptie was found to be in possession of 50 stamp bags of heroin, a used syringe and a red cap with white residue, according to police.

Slupe said preliminary evidence indicates someone brought heroin into the hospital for Baptie prior to his first overdose. Township police will lead the investigation.

After the first overdose, Baptie’s bond was modified from unsecured to $100,000, according to court documents. Slupe said deputies were assigned to constantly monitor Baptie and his room assignment was changed.

Despite the newly assigned supervision, Baptie experienced a second overdose at 11:30 p.m. Monday and was administered Narcan. Slupe said Baptie already had heroin in his possession.

“When an inmate is guarded by a deputy sheriff, there are no visitors or phone calls allowed while under our supervision,” Slupe said.

Police said additional stamp bags were again found in Baptie’s backpack. Slupe said Baptie was then searched and changed rooms again.

Baptie overdosed again on Tuesday and was administered Narcan around 12:30 p.m. An additional 3 to 6 stamp bags were found in Baptie’s possession with markings different from those recovered after the first two incidents. The hospital room was also searched.

“You can search a guy and miss something. It happens all the time,” Slupe said. “That’s why we have body scanners (at the prison and courthouse).”

Baptie’s preliminary hearing was not yet scheduled as of Friday.
