A shop on the corner of Main and East Cunningham streets has only been vacant for a few months, but will soon be filled by a tenant looking to offer fresh food in the city center.

The former Rite Aid located on Main Street will be occupied by a Dollar General in the coming months, Mayor Bob Dandoy confirmed at a city forum meeting Thursday, Aug. 14.

“The good news about that particular move is that it’s going to be a DG Market,” he said. “That means they’ll have groceries. They’ll offer produce, refrigerated and frozen food offerings, dairy products and more in addition to an assortment of fresh meat.”

Dandoy said the company aims to move by October of this year and will vacate its current location at 119 N. Main St.

“This isn’t a huge supermarket, but it is going to take care of the people who are in our city and don’t have the transportation to get to Giant Eagle or Walmart,” he said.

Dandoy also said the city will plan a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the location’s opening.

Pullman Park roof repairs

Since a new agreement for management of Historic Pullman Park took effect in July, progress on getting facilities back up to standards has been steadily moving forward.

Mayor Bob Dandoy said at the city forum meeting on Thursday, Aug. 14, that he has received a bid for repairs to the roof of the park and he would look to present it for a vote to council at the meeting later in the month.

“The bid is about $21,614 and it is through COSTARS,” Dandoy said. COSTARS is the state’s cooperative purchasing program.

The bidder, Pennsylvania Roofing Systems, will begin the work shortly after the next meeting, if the work is accepted.

“The school district has worked with them to do some other work for the district, I believe,” Dandoy said.

The roof is the second repair done, after turf, since the July 1 agreement between the city and school district.

The bid will go to a vote at the Butler City Council meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28.
