Luigi's Restaurant became the first business to ride the wave of the future prior to the start of the fall 2007 semester at Slippery Rock University when the school began implementing its new student identification and payment system.

Express pay reader machines were installed in the restaurant on Slippery Rock’s Main Street on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2007, and a demonstration was held to show how the new token system will work. A small token can be installed on the back of a student's cellphone that will work with the system. If the student doesn't want the token on the phone, it can be used just like a traditional card system.

SRU would be the first institution in North America to use radio frequency identification technology for this type of tag, to be used much like a debit card.
