National 811 Day celebrated with reminders to call

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission marked National 811 Day on Monday, Aug. 11, by reminding anyone with an excavation project to call 8-1-1 beforehand.

A release by the commission said the Pennsylvania One Call system is intended to reduce risks by ensuring utility companies mark underground lines, including electric, gas, water, sewer and telecommunications, before any digging takes place.

State law requires all excavation work to be preceded by a contractor calling 8-1-1 at least three business days in advance.

The commission also said to wait for lines to be marked, to verify markings before digging, and to use caution and respect markings while digging.
