A longstanding monument in Harmony got hit by a truck Friday morning, Aug. 8, leading it to be removed from its place in the town square at the intersection of Main and Mercer streets.

Harmony Mayor Cathy Rape said she heard the monument, a memorial to troops who died in military service, got hit by a truck, even though signs route trucks around the square to avoid this problem.

“When you come in on Main Street, take a right on German Street, go to the stop sign make a left, make a left on Mercer Street, that takes you directly to U.S. Liner,” she said. “It goes around because of the monuments, you can't make a turn without damaging it.”

Council president Greg Such said a firefighter contacted him at around 6 a.m. Friday to report that the monument was down. He said the memorial had been there since before the 1970s, and borough officials are now having the damage assessed.

“I sure hope it can be repaired,” Such said.
