Police: Butler man charged after heroin found in vehicle

A Butler man was reportedly found with a brick of suspected heroin during a traffic stop, police said.

Jason Paul Stephenson, 44, was charged Monday, Aug. 4, with felony controlled substance possession with intent to deliver and one misdemeanor count each of controlled substance possession and drug paraphernalia possession following a traffic stop in October 2023.

Police said Stephenson was stopped for having heavily tinted windows, then consented to a vehicle search. Police said the vehicle’s glove box was locked and Stephenson said it had been locked since he bought the vehicle.

When police opened the glove box, they found a suspected brick of heroin and a recent lottery ticket, which showed the glove box had been recently opened, police said. Police also found $3,000 in cash on Stephenson.

Police said text messages on Stephenson’s phone showed he was contacted by other people to provide heroin.

Stephenson’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. Aug. 18 before District Judge William Fullerton.
