Four of the iconic blue postage collection boxes in the city of Butler and Center Township have been removed as part of a reassessment by the U.S. Postal Service.

According to a representative, the Postal Service determined two collection areas near Butler had a “very low volume” of outgoing mail.

As a result, one box was removed from Clearview Mall at 101 Clearview Circle in Center Township, while three boxes were removed from the Butler post office at 345 S. Main St. The representative said two of the office’s boxes on Wayne Street were removed, as well as one of the two on Main Street.

“For decades, the installation and removal of the Postal Service’s blue collection mailboxes from streets across the country has been based on mail volume received in those boxes,” the representative said. “It is a fluid process and figures can vary. Removing boxes with consistently very low volumes is simply good business.”

Since each of the locations had multiple boxes, the Postal Service decided to leave one box at each location.

“It is important to note that anyone with a residential or business mailbox can use it as a vehicle to send outgoing mail,” the representative said.
