East Butler councilman resigns
EAST BUTLER — Ed Nagy, a councilman for the borough since 2019, has stepped down from his role.
Borough council voted 3-0 to accept Nagy’s resignation at a meeting on Monday, Aug. 4. While Nagy was not present at the meeting, he left a note to be read aloud to attendees.
“You guys are doing a great job, and I’m proud of all of you,” Nagy’s letter said. “I just can’t do things like I used to. Thank you for all of the hard work that you do for the people of East Butler.”
Council members Ben Herald, Tracie Williams and Dave Geibel voted to accept the resignation.
Nagy’s resignation represents the only currently unoccupied seat on the council.
Butler County Bureau of Elections shows three spots on council are up for grabs during the upcoming Nov. 4 general election.
The only Republican candidate on the ballot is councilwoman Tracie Williams, who is seeking reelection. Councilmen Dave Geibel and Dean Vincent also moved forward as write-in candidates.
In other business, borough council voted 3-0 to approve treasurer Jill Titus’ request to transfer $14,000 from the general fund to liquid fuels fund to rectify an issue found with a borough purchase from 2021.
“(The auditor) and the state said that we didn’t use our liquid fuels appropriately, and the state told us that we had to pay $44,000 back,” Titus explained.
While the state originally wanted $44,000 for two separate matters, she was able to clear one up, leaving the remaining $14,000 payment to be made.
However, the payment would not mean the borough loses the money. Titus said once the transfer is complete, the state will consider the work done in 2021 to be paid for directly by the borough.
“It doesn’t leave us, it just goes into our other account” she said. “Once I do that, I’ll notify (PennDOT), then the state will release our liquid fuel funds for this year, because they’re still holding those right now. That’s $33,000.”
The next East Butler Borough Council meeting is scheduled for Sept. 8.
