Butler man charged in about 8 vehicle thefts

Police accused a Butler man of breaking into about eight vehicles in Butler Township earlier this month.

Richard James Brown, 45, allegedly admitted to breaking into seven or eight vehicles in the area of Walmart in Butler Township and taking $300 between July 11 and 15, according to Butler Township police.

Police responded to the area of Boyd Drive on July 14 and spoke with a woman who said $250 was taken from her purse. The money was stolen between 9 p.m. July 11 and 9:30 a.m. July 12 from her purse left in her unlocked car parked in her driveway.

Police viewed footage from a neighbor’s Ring doorbell camera that showed a man, later identified as Brown, pushing a bike near the vehicle around 3 a.m. that night.

Police later discovered that another officer responded to a second reported theft on nearby Charles Street around the same time. Police said Brown was seen taking a drink from a cooler, looking into cars and pulling their door handles while wearing the same clothes as in the previous incident.

Police encountered Brown again July 15 during an incident in Butler. Police said Brown admitted to the acts in a July 20 interview after being shown a still photo of himself on Charles Street.

Brown was charged with one misdemeanor count each of theft, and loitering and prowling. His preliminary hearing is yet to be scheduled.
