Butler man charged with assaulting police officer
A Butler man is accused of assaulting an officer following a June confrontation in Penn Township, according to police.
Anthony Kopas, 43, was charged Monday, July 28, with felony aggravated assault, and misdemeanor counts of obstruction, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and simple assault following the alleged incident.
According to an affidavit in the case, a police officer was seated in a vehicle at the Penn Township Municipal Building when a vehicle driven by Kopas pulled beside him. Police said Kopas rolled down his window and demanded to know why a different officer had not returned his phone calls.
Police said a call was made to check the status of the case. Police then told Kopas his case was under investigation, and that an officer would follow up the next day.
Police said Kopas began raising his voice and becoming more aggressive upon hearing the news. The officer reported asking Kopas for his driver’s license and said he refused.
The officer then asked Kopas to step out of the vehicle, but Kopas locked it, according to the affidavit.
Police said Kopas was becoming combative and lifted his arm, prompting the officer to grab it.
According the affidavit, Kopas started rolling up his window causing glass to shatter, injuring Kopas and the officer. Police said Kopas was then removed from the vehicle and arrested.
Once in custody, Kopas was treated for lacerations to his arm. The officer sustained injuries to his left ring finger, his palm and his shoulder.
Kopas’ preliminary hearing is yet to be scheduled.
