Local law enforcement and U.S. Capitol Police are working to determine who vandalized an office of U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-16th, earlier this weekend.

According to a statement released by Kelly on the morning of Saturday, July 26, his Hermitage office was vandalized with messages ranging from accusations toward the representative and the Republican Party to statements, such as “mental illness is not a crime.”

“Overnight, our new Hermitage District Office was vandalized. Local law enforcement, along with U.S. Capitol Police, are investigating the incident,” Kelly said in his Saturday statement. “Our staff members are safe and were not in the office at the time of the crime.”

Kelly’s district, comprises Butler, Lawrence, Erie, Mercer and Crawford counties, as well as parts of Venango County.

“Let's be clear: political violence and vandalism are never acceptable,” Kelly concluded in his statement.

Further details on the investigation had not been released as of Sunday afternoon.
