Woman charged with DUI, fleeing police after short pursuit

A Butler woman is facing charges after leading police a short pursuit in the city on Sunday, July 20.

Tiana Birckbichler, 29, has been charged with felony fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, misdemeanor driving under the influence and summary charges of failing to stop at a stop sign, careless driving, speeding and failing to use low beams within 500 feet of an oncoming car.

According to the affidavit, a state trooper spotted a Jeep Compass using its high beam lights while traveling northbound on Route 8 around 2 a.m. on Sunday. After clocking Birckbichler’s speed at 61 mph in a 45 mph zone, the officer activated his emergency lights.

The Jeep Compass accelerated before turning onto West Wayne Street, where it reached 60 mph in a 25 mph zone, the affidavit said.

After turning onto South Chestnut Street, the officer intentionally struck Birckbichler’s vehicle causing it to turn sideways and stop, police said.

The officer detained Birckbichler and detected alcohol on her breath, the affidavit said. She admitted to drinking earlier in the night, police said.

Birckbichler is being held at Butler County Prison as she was unable to post her $10,000 bail. A date for her preliminary hearing has yet to be set.
