State releases cause of 911 outage

The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency released a report Tuesday, July 22, that reveals the cause of the intermittent statewide 911 system outages on July 11.

According to a release by the agency, Next Generation Core Services — the systems and components used to process and route calls from phones to 911 centers — experienced a defect that resulted in disruptions to call delivery.

The disruptions were not believed to be a result of a cyberattack, the agency determined.

The agency thanked the staff at the 61 public safety answering points for their hard work and dedication to serving their communities during the outage.

A more detailed analysis of the issue and corrective measures to enhance system redundancy are currently being executed, the agency said. When complete, additional information is expected to be released.

The agency suggests saving the appropriate 911 center 10-digit nonemergency number. Butler County’s number is 724-282-1221.
