Cranberry Township learning center employee charged with assault

A Cranberry Township learning center employee was charged Wednesday, July 23, with assaulting a 2-year-old girl, resulting in a fractured elbow.

Cranberry Township police charged Richa Gupte, 38, of Pittsburgh, with misdemeanor simple assault following the alleged June 2 incident. Police said they learned of the incident from a June 9 ChildLine report.

Police said the assault occurred at Allie Alligator Learning Center, where Gupte is an assistant group supervisor. Police said Gupte failed to notify the learning center of the injury.

Police said the 2-year-old girl was reaching for a toy on a shelf when Gupte redirected her and forcefully pulled her away from the shelf by her left arm. The girl immediately started to cry and hold her left arm, according to the affidavit.

The girl was examined June 3 and diagnosed with an occult left elbow fracture.

Gupte’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Aug. 29 before District Judge Kevin Flaherty.

Another incident

About a month prior, on June 17, another assistant group supervisor at Allie Alligator Learning Center was charged with felony child endangerment and misdemeanor simple assault after similar incident.

Police said in that incident, the employee was seated next to a small elevated bed with the 3-year-old boy while patting his back. When the boy lifted his head to look at the employee, he forcefully pushed the boy back onto the bed causing his face to hit off the frame.

Police said the boy had redness and swelling to his left eye and required medical evaluation. They said the push was forceful enough to shift the bed a few inches as the boy’s head struck the frame.
