Butler man reportedly breaks officer’s nose, runs from police

A Butler man broke an officer’s nose and ran from police after he hit a car with a guitar Monday, July 14, police said.

Richard J. Brown, 45, was charged with three felony counts of evading arrest, felony assault on a police officer and misdemeanor disorderly conduct following the alleged July 14 incident.

Police said they were patrolling the area of North Bluff and West Locust streets when they spotted Brown riding a bicycle while holding a guitar. Police said they witnessed the bicycle proceed past a Jaguar sports car and Brown hit the vehicle with his guitar.

Police said they then conducted a traffic stop on Brown, who gave a false identity when questioned. Police said Brown was not carrying an ID. When police suspected Brown of giving a false identity and asked him to provide an ID, he stepped away and began running, according to the affidavit.

Police said they chased Brown across the street and through yards until he slipped on trash next to a residence and began to fall. Officers then tackled Brown as he began fighting, the affidavit said.

One officer was struck in the nose during the incident, resulting in a broken nose, police said. Police used physical strikes, drive stuns and pressure points to subdue Brown until they gained control, according to the affidavit.

Brown is being held in Butler County Prison on a $50,000 bond. His preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
