Chicora grandmother accused of negligence, allowing small children to leave home

A Chicora grandmother was charged Monday, July 14, with misdemeanor child endangerment after she allowed her grandchildren to escape her home, according to police.

Dana Josephine Martin, 50, was charged following a June 13 incident. Police said they were dispatched to a home on North Main Street for a welfare check on two children after a woman driving by called 911 saying she saw two children in the road.

Police said the woman stopped her truck and one child ran back into the open door of the home. The woman then walked the other child to the same home and had to knock multiple times and yell before getting someone’s attention.

Police visited the house and spoke with Martin, who was the only adult home. Martin reportedly told police her grandchildren like to open doors and she attempted to block the door to no avail.

Police said this was the second incident of this nature and they had told Martin to get child locks for the door.

Police did not disclose the children’s ages.

Martin’s preliminary hearing before District Judge Lewis Stoughton has yet to be scheduled.
