Butler woman charged after 3 people are flown to Pittsburgh hospitals following Buffalo Township crash

A Butler woman was criminally charged after a three-vehicle crash resulted in three people being flown to Pittsburgh area hospitals from Buffalo Township.

On July 3, Buffalo Township police charged Amanda Barbara Gniewkowski, 37, of Butler, with two misdemeanor counts each of reckless endangerment and driving under the influence of alcohol following the March 30 crash.

Police said they arrived at a crash around 8:45 p.m. on South Pike Road and immediately saw two heavily damaged vehicles, one with fire coming from the engine area. Multiple bystanders were assisting.

Bystanders told police one person was still inside the burning vehicle, so they removed the person from the vehicle while an officer extinguished the fire.

When police were again able to assess the scene, they saw a man lying on his back in the grass about 15 feet behind a black Subaru Forester involved in the crash. Police said bystanders removed John Hanley from the vehicle and saw he had suspected critical injuries and bloody facial injuries from the crash. Hanley was conscious but could not speak, police said.

An officer then noticed a woman laying face down in the same grassy area and identified her as Gniewkowski, who was also removed from the vehicle by bystanders. Police said she had a compound fracture to her lower left leg and was semiconscious.

Police said another man was laying a few yards to her right closer to the road and was talking to one of the bystanders while laying on his back. Police said the man, identified as Anthony Pockey, was also removed from the vehicle by bystanders and had serious injuries.

Pockey told police he was driving a red GMC Sierra near Buffalo Plaza Drive when another vehicle came into his lane and struck his GMC head on.

When police later spoke with Hanley, they found he was Gniewkowski’s passenger. He said the two of them work together, stopped at a bar and both had several alcoholic drinks.

Police then got a search warrant for Gniewkowski’s blood and saw she had a blood alcohol content of 0.209% the night of the crash. The legal limit in Pennsylvania is 0.08%.

Gniewkowski’s preliminary hearing before District Judge Jack Ripper is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. Aug. 5.
