Herbert Grossman

Grossman

Herbert L. Grossman, 92, of Butler, is remembered for his wit, his love of chatting with anyone and his ability to put a smile on the faces of those who knew him. Herby passed away Friday, July 11, 2025.

Herby is preceded in death by his brother and business partner, Larry. The Grossman brothers took ownership of Robins Furniture in the early 1950s from their parents, the late Irvin Grossman and Gertrude (Robins) Grossman. “Big Bargain Herb” was a proud downtown Butler merchant after his discharge from the Army in 1955 until the business closed in 1994.

Herb enjoyed both technical and creative pursuits. Most notably, he fashioned himself as the “Kosher Ham” by achieving an Advanced Amateur Radio license. He was also a genealogy buff who documented his family history from the time they immigrated to the United States.

In his latter years, Herb spent his time volunteering at B’nai Abraham Synagogue. He was also active in support of his Butler High School Class of 1951.

He is survived by his wife of over 66 years, Sara Grossman; two daughters, Ronna Grossman-Schenker and her husband, Hal, of Baltimore, Md., and Jill Simon and her husband, Scott, of Pittsburgh; one son, Irvin Grossman of Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
