CONNOQUENESSING TWP -- The life-size bronze statue of Corey Comperatore unveiled at the Butler Farm Show grounds on Sunday, July 13, shows the former Buffalo Township firefighter and father of two wearing his “normal dad clothes.”

His widow, Helen Comperatore, said she chose for the statue to depict Corey Comperatore in a fishing shirt, his “famous boots” and nothing political.

“He never took his boots off,” Helen Comperatore said in an interview leading up to Sunday’s celebration of life for her late husband, where the statue was unveiled.

The red-brown, steel-toed boots were “almost dressy,” she explained. He’d often pair them with jeans and a dress shirt while working at JSP International, but he’d wear them everywhere else as well.

He had more than a dozen pairs of the same shoes in his closet when he died. He used his employer’s allowance for boots annually to purchase the same style shoe but could never part with the previous pair.

Corey Comperatore was shot and killed on July 13, 2024, while attending a campaign rally for then candidate President Donald Trump. He died shielding his wife and their two adult daughters from the gunfire.

Two other men were critically injured in the assassination attempt, and Trump’s ear was grazed.

“I felt Corey deserved a place there. So many people have come all year around, from all over the world to be there,” Helen Comperatore said about the venue. “I wanted a place for them — and a place for my children.”

The daughters, Allyson and Kaylee Comperatore, pulled back the curtain covering the statue on Sunday evening after Helen Comperatore and the statue’s creator, Alan Cottrill, of Zanesville, Ohio, addressed the crowd.

Helen and others from Corey Comperatore’s immediate family then joined her daughters at the base of the statue. They collectively paused to look at the depiction of Corey Comperatore, talking and crying together, before resuming the ceremony.

For the statue, Helen Comperatore said she intentionally chose Cottrill, who spoke at the celebration of life on Sunday about his process behind making the statue.

“You’ll see here momentarily, I tried to capture the essence of Corey,” Cottrill said at the unveiling. “His face has just a hint of a smile. I didn’t want to get an open-mouth smile. I wanted something a little more serious, so just a hint of the smile.”

The statue features Comperatore with his Bible in one hand and has elements to represent Helen and his daughters.

“He’s wearing his wedding band, that’s me,” Helen Comperatore said in an interview before the event. “And he has two bracelets in his hand.”

One reads “Allyson,” and the other says “Kaylee,” recognizing both his daughters.

At the celebration, Cottrill explained his process behind recreating some of Corey Comperatore’s personal items for the statue.

“I said (to Helen Comperatore) ‘I would like to 3D scan his actual boots. I’d like to 3D scan his actual Bible with the tabs in the last pages he put markers in, and I’d also like to 3D scan his wedding band so we can have an exact replica of those elements,’” Cottrill said.

A plaque to be placed with the statue reads, “Faithful, Christian, honorable, and devoted husband to Helen. Loving, proud father to Allyson and Kaylee. Son to Karen, and brother to Kelly and Dawn.

“United States Army Veteran, firefighter for Buffalo Twp VFD for 34 years, avid fisherman, and loved by our many family dogs.

“Corey’s life was taken tragically while protecting his wife and daughters. Forever loved, forever missed, your courage, your legacy, will live on in us forever until we meet again.”

Helen Comperatore said she intentionally chose Cottrill to create the statue after admiring a life-size statue of Trump punching his fist in the air as he was hurried off stage on July 13, 2024.

While the statue of Corey will be located at the farm show grounds — right beside the Butler Farm Show office — the statue of Trump is yet to find its permanent home.

Wherever it winds up, Helen Comperatore said she appreciates that Cottrill was a force behind creating both bronze statues.

The statue of Corey Comperatore will later be positioned behind a locked gate outside of regular farm show grounds’ office hours.

“It’s there for everyone,” Helen Comperatore said of the statue. “I want people to go up and see it. He’s our county’s hero.”
