911 system back to normal, investigation still in progress

The statewide emergency 911 system was restored around 10 p.m. on Friday, July 11, after encountering intermittent connectivity issues earlier that day.

Steve Bicehouse, director of Butler Emergency Services, said Sunday afternoon, July 13, there are no major updates on the root of the outage and that the state is still looking into the cause, particularly at the NG911, next-generation 911 software.

“They have some ideas but nothing concrete right now,” Bicehouse said. “An intermittent outage that is statewide is always an unusual event.”

“A full root cause analysis is underway and will take several days to complete. Based on our preliminary investigation, there is no indication that this is cyber related,” Jeff Robertson, president of Comtech's Terrestrial and Wireless Networks Business Segment, said.

Comtech is the operator of the NG911 system and was in charge of isolating the problem, patching up the system and bringing it back online, according to the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.

Bicehouse said that though Butler County residents can go back to using 911 as normal, they can always use the alternate 724-282-1221 number.
