ICE, sheriff upholding the law
Louise D. Tanner’s letter (“Immigration enforcement has gone too far,” July 6, Page A4) expresses concern about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in our community, suggesting a fear of indiscriminate targeting. However, as long as individuals are legal citizens or residents, there is no cause for alarm.
ICE’s focus is on enforcing immigration laws, not harassing law-abiding citizens.
Tanner’s mention of military members with “undocumented wives” raises questions. Why specify only wives and not spouses broadly? More important, those who serve our country should uphold its laws, including immigration policies, rather than knowingly violating them.
Tanner’s criticism of ICE agents wearing masks to protect their identities is misguided. Law enforcement officers, including ICE, face real threats, and concealing their identities safeguards them and their families. ICE agents operate within the law, not against it.
As for “weapon-carrying ICE agents,” expecting them to face potential violence, like Molotov cocktails or bricks, without proper equipment is unreasonable. Their role demands preparedness to ensure public safety.
I commend the Butler County Sheriff’s Department for their professionalism and dedication. They, alongside ICE, work to uphold the rule of law, keeping our community secure.
