Freedom Road extension project enters final phase; detours set

Roadwork DME

The Freedom Road extension project in Cranberry Township is entering its final phase, but drivers will have to put up with a few weeks of additional detours before the long-awaited completion.

The project — which includes new highway and turning lanes, widening, paving, drainage, signal upgrades and replacements, and lighting work — is expected to finish in November at a cost of $18 million.

From July 21 through Sept. 5, a detour will be in place for the closure of Rolling Road. Freedom Road eastbound and westbound traffic will detour onto Laporte Drive to the end of the detour on Rolling Road. Then Rolling Road traffic will detour to Freedom Road via Laporte Drive to Freedom Road.

In addition, night work for water line relocation on Franklin Road in Cranberry Township is set to take place July 13 through 25.

Single-lane closures will take place between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. those days as the waterline will be relocated along Franklin Road between the Route 228 and Hillmont Drive intersections.

Adams Township supervisors discussed plans Monday night to transfer about five miles of Three Degree Road back to the township from PennDOT.
Franklin Road project

The Franklin Road safety improvement project is a three-year project which began in April 2024 and is expected to finish in November 2027, at a cost of $19.1 million. It includes shoulder widening, installation of edge-line rumble strips and sight distance improvements along Franklin Road.

PennDOT will also provide a short-term detour on Route 228 for the Three Degree Road Intersection Project in Middlesex and Adams townships.

Starting at 6 p.m. from July 13 through 28, flaggers will direct traffic on Route 228 to begin to implement the detour. Three Degree Road, north of Route 228, will be closed to Davidson Road for the widening of the road, drainage installation, traffic signal work, Americans with Disabilities Act ramp construction and driveway adjustments.

To detour, motorists will use Route 228, Mars Evans City Road, Union Church Road and Valencia Three Degree Road.

New traffic signals have been installed on Franklin Road at the intersection of Mars Road and the new Hillmont Drive, which is the main access road to Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School. The intersection is the last one before Franklin Road meets Route 228.
