Top Cardinals prospect JJ Wetherholt, Mars High graduate, named to MLB All-Star Futures Game
Mars graduate and St. Louis Cardinals farmhand JJ Wetherholt was named to the 2025 MLB All-Star Futures Game on Monday.
Among the 50 players included on those rosters, Wetherholt is one of 31 on the MLB.com Top 100 Prospects list. Wetherholt is the No. 16 ranked player, with San Diego’s Leo De Vries (No. 3), Boston’s Marcelo Mayer (No. 8), Texas’ Sebastian Walcott (No. 9) and Seattle’s Colt Emerson (No. 15) being the shortstops ahead of him.
The Futures Game will be played at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 12, at Atlanta’s Truist Park. It will air on MLB Network, MLB.TV, MLB.com and via the MLB app.
De Vries and Wallcott will also take part in the Futures Game.
With St. Louis’ Double-A team, the Springfield Cardinals, Wetherholt has slashed .305/.430/.453 this season. He has five home runs and 27 RBIs.
Wetherholt was taken No. 7 overall in last year’s MLB draft after playing collegiately at West Virginia. MLB.com estimates he’ll arrive in the major sometime next season.
“He opened his college career with time at second and third but moved to short in 2024, a transition he continued in the Minors,” his MLB.com bio says. “He has the arm and athleticism to handle the six but will bump into Masyn Winn at the position if he continues up the St. Louis chain, at which time a move elsewhere shouldn’t be a major concern.”
In 74 games this season, Winn is slashing .263/.328/.391 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs.
