The list of accomplishments is not short for Butler High graduate CJ Singleton.
He was an elite cross country and track runner at the district, state and national level for the Golden Tornado before graduating in 2022, helping Butler win a PIAA team track and field title that year by winning the Class 3A 3,200. He was recently named an All-American in the steeplechase while competing for Notre Dame.
Winning the Butler Road Race was not one of his feats, however, until Saturday. In just his second appearance here, Singleton took first place in the men’s 5-mile in a time of 25 minutes, 52.29 seconds.
“I’m back in town for the summer and figured there was nothing stopping me from running today, and I like doing things in the community,” he said. “I was just out here for fun, but it feels cool to win. Coming up Main Street near the end was awesome. This is a special event.”
Singleton will be a senior accounting major at Notre Dame in the fall. One of his teammates there is 2024 Butler graduate Drew Griffith, himself a former high school star at Butler. The duo is part of a number of WPIAL products who now dot the roster for the Fighting Irish.
“It’s pretty neat, being on the same team with guys I ran with or against in high school,” Singleton said. “I love it at Notre Dame. It feels like home.”
Competitive spirit helped Bryson Myrlie redeem himself.
“I ran this race last year and didn’t do well,” the Butler resident said. “I thought about all the kids who finished in front of me and said: ‘That’s not happening again.’
“People don’t realize that hill coming up Main Street. It really hits you.”
Myrlie’s finish in 6:58.20 paced the field Saturday. He trained for the event by running outside his home, which is near the Butler Walmart, and at Alameda Park.
“My mom was always a runner and she tried to get me into it a few years ago, but I hated it. I ran in a fifth/sixth-grade meet and did pretty well, but didn’t really get into it until about a year ago.”
His thoughts on running have changed, and the incoming sophomore at Butler is now on the cross country and track teams.
“Next I will be doing a triathlon at Moraine in August,” he said. “I’m training for it, all the biking and swimming, too.”
Following are men’s results from the 2025 Butler Road Race.
