Margaret “Peg” Jane Stickel, 93, of Portersville, passed away at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh on Thursday, June 26, 2025, following a brief illness.

She was born Sept. 8, 1931, in Slippery Rock Borough, Butler County, to Edward Halley Sickle and Mary Jane Rubright Sickle.

Peg graduated in 1949 from Slippery Rock High School and later attended Business Training School, now called Point Park University, in Pittsburgh. She graduated from Slippery Rock State Teachers College, now called Slippery Rock University, where she received her teacher’s certification.

Peg married Arthur Clayton “Art” Stickel on Aug. 1, 1957, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 1999.

Peg retired in 1993 as a fourth-grade elementary school teacher working at Mercer Elementary School. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church of Portersville. She organized trips for the Keenagers where she remained active. She remained in contact with many of her former students through social media.

Survivors include daughters, Kim (Robert) Dempsey of Portersville and Cindy (Al) Mittiga of Rose Hill, N.C.; son-in-law, James Jansce of Portersville; brother, David E. Sickle of Sunbury, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Sally Jansce; stepfather, S. Howard Burnside in 1979; and brother, Richard E. Sickle in 1993.

STICKEL — The family of Margaret “Peg” Jane Stickel, who died Thursday, June 26, 2025, will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 30, at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock.

Friends will also be received from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Presbyterian Church of Portersville, 1297 Perry Highway, Portersville. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church, with the Rev. Dana Opp, pastor of the church, presiding.

Interment will be in Portersville Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Keenagers or the Portersville Food Pantry.
