The youth sailing camp at Moraine is fun and useful
How lucky are the people of Butler County to live in an area where a state park not only contains miles and miles of trails and woods to hike through, but a large body of water for even more outdoor activity?
Moraine State Park has both of those amenities, and people take advantage of them every month of the year — Lake Arthur included, through ice fishing in the winter to swimming, boating and sailing in the summer. For each of these activities, it helps to know what to do when the water gets its way.
A sailing camp operates at the state park for a few weeks every summer, which teaches youths ages 8 to 15 not only how to sail, but how to operate crafts in the water and, importantly, water safety and rescue protocols.
With Moraine and McConnells Mill state parks each offering unique bodies of water, this safety information is important for youths to know, especially those who regularly find themselves seeking out experiences in the great outdoors. Whether they are swimming alone or, hopefully with company, these youths will know good practices for safety in the water.
That’s the other benefit of living near Moraine State Park — it is always host to educational courses and events that teach people about nature, the environment and ways to interact with it. Not every county in Pennsylvania has a public lake where organizations can host activities, so it’s great to see people create a camp that teaches sailing.
If you are considering going into Lake Arthur this summer, whether it be for a swim or on a watercraft, just make sure you know the basics for water safety. If you don’t, you could always learn some knowledge from the very same place where you can apply that knowledge.
