Police: 16-year-old girl injured in distracted driving crash

A 16-year-old girl driving May 31 in Forward Township left the road and crashed into a tree after she was distracted by her cellphone, police said.

State police in Butler said the girl, of Harmony, was taken to UPMC Passavant hospital in Cranberry Township by her parents with suspected minor injuries, including a cut on her hand.

The teen’s vehicle left the road while taking a right curve at around 50 mph while she was looking at her phone on Brownsdale Road, police said. The crash occurred around 9:36 p.m.

The 2018 Nissan Sentra was disabled and towed by MD Hitch. The teen was charged with driving at unsafe speeds.

Butler Ambulance Service also responded to the crash.

Paul Miller’s law took effect days later on June 5, making it illegal to hold a phone while driving. The law makes interacting with a handheld digital device beyond a single tap illegal, including at stoplights. Drivers charged under the law will receive a warning for the law’s first year and a $50 fine after its first year.
